The Minnesota Twins acquired two-time All-Star pitcher Sonny Gray in a trade Sunday that will send 2021 first-round pick Chase Petty to the Reds.
Gray, 32, began his career with the Oakland A's and earned All-Star honors in 2015 when he finished the season with a 14-7 record and a 2.73 ERA, earning the third most AL Cy Young votes. Two years later, he was traded to the New York Yankees during the 2017 season. The Reds acquired Gray in a 2019 trade and he earned All-Star honors in his first season in Cincinnati.
More recently, Gray struggled through the 2021 season, finishing with a 7-9 record and 4.19 ERA.
Petty, 18, is still far from making his MLB debut, but there are high hopes for the right-handed pitcher after he earned New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year honors as a high school senior with a 1.15 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 48 2/3 innings. He also batted .368 with four home runs while playing some shortstop.
The trade also sent minor league pitcher Francis Peguero to the Twins.
