Commanders release WR Kelvin Harmon for second straight year
Former Washington Football Team wide receiver Kelvin Harmon. Scott Taetsch-USA TODAY Sports

For the second straight August, the Washington Commanders released wide receiver Kelvin Harmon. Harmon’s release this year was part of the Commanders’ transactions to trim their roster to 80 players before Tuesday’s deadline.

Washington also released offensive tackle Rashod Hill, placed defensive Chase Young and center Tyler Larsen on the reserved/PUP list and linebacker Nathan Gerry on injured reserve.

Harmon was a sixth-round draft pick of Washington in 2019. He came in along with Terry McLaurin and the two were viewed as the potential pass catching duo of the future. Harmon had 30 catches for 365 yards as a rookie. But, he tore his ACL training the following offseason that forced him to miss the entire 2020 season.

The Commanders released Harmon in August of last year before final cuts. He signed a reserve/futures contract in January. But, the Commanders are now set at wide receiver.

McLaurin is a franchise player and inked a three-year extension worth up to $72.8M last month. Curtis Samuel, who the team signed to a three-year, $34.5M last year, seems on track to be healthy after a marred 2021 season. Plus, Washington drafted Jahan Dotson in the first round this year and Dyami Brown last year in the third round.

Harmon has seemingly been unable to bounce back from his knee injury. Now he faces the next chapter of his pro career after being released once again by the Commanders before final cuts.
